Cause and Effect of Anorexia
Of all girls and women in the United States, ten percent will be affected by an eating disorder. Men and women alike are affected, however it is more common in women, specifically those aged thirteen to twenty. The most common eating disorder among teenage girls is anorexia nervosa. This disease is mostly linked with an overwhelming desire to be thin. People take extreme measures to achieve this goal (“Causes”). Anorexia is a very mysterious and misunderstood disease. One of the reasons for this is that scientists have not pinpointed one certain cause for the disease. There are many different causes ranging from genetic to environmental factors. This quick weight-loss can lead to amenorrhea and low levels of estrogen. Besides weight-loss, a person with anorexia will experience many other physical changes as well. For one, their skin will become very dry and will bruise easily. Because of vitamin deficiencies, the bruised skin will take much longer to heal than normal. A person with anorexia will also get cold very easily which could trigger their body to grow fine hair all over as an effort to stay warm. Other physical effects caused by anorexia are hair loss and brittle nails. These are also caused from vitamin and mineral deficiencies (“Physical”).
On top of the many physical effects of anorexia, there are also multiple physiological and emotional effects. These are sometimes considered more dangerous because they are harder to diagnose and associate specifically with anorexia. Many people with anorexia make the false assumption that drinking an abundance of water will help “flush out” their bodies of waste and increase weight-loss. This can cause hyponatremia, which is an overload of water in the body. Hyponatremia can lead to fluid in the lungs and can cause the brain to swell (“Physical”). Another physiological effect of anorexia is difficulty with digesting food. A person with anorexia often has a decrease in the necessary digestive enzymes, which causes the body to not be able to digest its food and
