Introduction
For a child, choosing sides between parents is no doubt overwhelming. The fear of showing more love or affection towards one or the other creates an inconceivable level of stress. There are many children faced with this dilemma every day. Divorce rates are on the rise, and the sacred union of marriage is not what it used to be; leaving children caught in the middle. Divorce has an effect on everyone involved and can be emotionally and physically draining on a family. Hurt feelings and anger often take precedence over doing what is truly best for the kids. There is also the aspect of children being raised in dysfunctional households that can have dire consequences. So the question is should a couple stay married only for

Position 2
Once a couple realizes that their marriage is over they should divorce. When the family environment is unhealthy and dysfunctional in can have the same level of effect on children as a divorce. According to Scientific American, In a 2002 study psychologist E. Mavis Hetherington of the University of Virginia and her then graduate student Anne Mitchell Elmore found that many children experience short-term negative effects from divorce, especially anxiety, anger, shock and disbelief. These reactions typically diminish or disappear by the end of the second year. Only a minority of kids suffer longer (Arkowitz, Hal and Lilienfeld, Scott O). Subjecting children to familial dysfunction can cause them to deal with stress in the same unconstructive manner and the parents do. They often do not know the difference between what is healthy and what is not. In the story “Separating, the parents make a decision to separate and although they have considered the children, go ahead as planned. The parents in that story determined that marriage had run its course, and it was best for everyone to separate (Updike).
Children raised in these types of environments are ….times as likely to be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship themselves. They are also more likely to develop behavior problems and display violent tendencies.
