All companies large or small must follow a set of regulations when it comes to hiring new employees or maintaining current employees. There are several different regulations that are required by state and each state has their specific regulations. Along with state regulations employers must follow federal regulations which are the same for every company. One of the most important federal regulations is for wages and salary. These are the regulations that decide what the minimum wage is and what the overtime rate is. The Fair Labor Standards Act, FLSA, “requires employers to pay covered employees who are not otherwise exempt at least the federal minimum wage and overtime pay of one-and-one-half-times the regular rate of pay” (U.S. department of labor, 2009, p.1). The FLSA also helps to governs child labor laws, for example, children younger than 16 have a certain amount of hours they can work and in some jobs, that are deemed too dangerous, children younger than 18 are not allowed to work. Another very important set of federal regulations are the regulations on workplace safety and health. These regulations are governed by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, OSHA.
