There is a mystery about the official birth date of William Shakespeare’s, but according to the documented parish register of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, he was baptized on April 26, 1564. His official birthday is traditionally celebrated on April 23, the feast day of Saint George. William Shakespeare was born into a middle class family to John and Mary Shakespeare. His father, John played a prominent role as a citizen in his local town holding positions as a council member, Chamberlain, bailiff, and even a shop owner dealing in leather goods. His mother, Mary came from an established family where she inherited land. William was the third of eight children and the first-born son who survived infancy. As a son of a municipal officer, Shakespeare was entitled to a free education in the town’s grammar school, which concentrated mainly on Latin studies, learning to read, write, and speak the language moderately well (“William Shakespeare”). In addition, he studied moralists, poets, classical literature, and history. When William was a teenager, his father stopped attending town council meetings and Shakespeare’s family fortune began to decline (Branum). As a result, Shakespeare never received a formal education from a university instead he entered into marriage at the age of eighteen.
