Great pieces of literature, like The Great Gatsby or Romeo and Juliet, are often adapted into film for many to enjoy. However, film adaptations of famous literature often provide different insight into the characters and plots of the original text. One such film adaptation is the 1995 version of William Shakespeare’s Othello, directed by Oliver Parker. Though the play consists of five main characters, this essay will focus mainly on how Emilia is portrayed in both the text and the film.
In Othello, Emilia plays two main roles: Iago’s wife and Desdemona’s friend and maid. Emilia is a very loyal character to both Iago and Desdemona by supporting them throughout most of the play. For example, when Othello says “She [Desdemona] was false as water,” (5.2.134) Emilia quickly responds with “Thou art rash as fire to say that she was false. O, she was heavenly true” (5.2.135-136). In this example, Emilia remains loyal to Desdemona and her mistress’ purity. On the other hand, Emilia, throughout most of the play, supports Iago and follows his orders, whether it be getting him Desdemona’s handkerchief or simply justifying his actions as honest. Despite her loyalty, some still question whether Emilia is an honest and trustworthy character or not. This moral questioning arises form the fact that Emilia took Desdemona’s handkerchief and did not confess to it when Othello asked even though her confession would have helped prove Desdemona’s innocence and fidelity.
