In Francis Fukuyama’s “Human Dignity” and the Dalai Lama’s “Ethics and New Genetics”, the authors are questioning new biotechnologies and their influence on human morals. Fukuyama, like the Dalai Lama, sees the threat in these technologies and they are both concerned about proper use of them. This paper will examine how new biogenetic developments and moral ethics can coexist together. Through this careful examination the evidence will explore views of both of the authors on biogenetics and the way they can modify human essence. While on the surface the authors discuss state-of-art genetic technologies what they really try to convey is a notion of human dignity and how it can be affected by science.
In the Dalai Lama’s article, he states that there is right time and place for when we should use technological and genetic advances. He is deeply concerned that people are going wrong direction and they should find their right path in order to save human essence. Francis Fukuyama, meanwhile, answers the Dalai Lama’s call for morality explaining human nature and progressing takeover of biotechnologies. The authors support the idea that everything that is happening right now must be stopped and carefully thought out. But Fukuyama, in contrast to the Dalai Lama, says irreversible has already happened. While the Dalai Lama still has faith in people who should come to their senses and avoid ugly consequences.
