In the play, Othello, there are several unique characters but none like Iago himself. He is one of a kind. He is a master manipulator and a conniving delinquent above all. He preys upon the innocent to perceive his longing for deceiving everyone in his way. Which most readers believe that it was all about Iago’s jealousy of Othello. In Othello, Iago possesses within himself a unique characteristic. He is manipulative and parasitic. Iago brings his character about throughout the play and we find out how he truly is.
Iago uses manipulation to an advantage, Roderigo is his first target, he is gullible and innocent. Roderigo is easily manipulated, his longing for Desdemona make him sensitive to Iago’s plan of manipulation. His lust for Desdemona causes him to believe everything Iago says, in all of hopes to get Desdemona in the end. In the beginning, Iago fools Roderigo for his fortune, convincing him that Desdemona would receive all the jewels and gold. “Thou shalt enjoy her. Therefore make money.” (Othello, I.III,25). Iago is stating that if he can get together enough money, Desdemona will leave Othello for a younger man and will sleep with Roderigo. Giving Roderigo enormous hope and even more desire for Desdemona. But Iago wants it for himself, but Roderigo is innocent and has no idea. “Thus do I ever make my fool my purse; For I mine own gained knowledge should profane If I would time expend with such a snipe But for my sport and profit” (Othello, I.III,26).
