Throughout history there has been a general understanding that appearances can be deceiving. A person may go through life without anyone understanding the true reality of their character. William Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers of all time, understood the relationship between appearance and reality and often gave characters two sides to their personality.
One of the most fundamental questions in philosophy is the one of appearance vs. reality. We find ourselves asking the question of what is genuinely “real,” and what is viewed merely as just an “appearance,” and not real? This is our first impression on both Roderigo and Iago, but it’s not hard to tell Iago is the more powerful character as he has Roderigo in the palm of his hands. Iago demonstrates and proves his unloyal and betraying side to his personality in the quote ‘In following him, I follow but myself’ Translation ‘I’m just serving him to get what I want’. Iago is manipulating appearances by being two-faced. He pretends to be loyal to Othello because he wants his revenge.

In Act 1 Scene 2 we straight away realize Iago is successfully switching personalities with no hesitation which is surprising as Iago’s point of view towards Othello in the scene before was so negative and full of hate. It’s a strong skill to be able to hold such an act towards someone more superior then yourself and keep the act going. As Iago knows what he’s creating and developing in Othello’s head demonstrates the twisted and confusing personality Iago has in reality but strongly hides in appearance. The actions Iago performs displays the courage and villainess mindset he possesses which displays Iago is the antagonist and Othello is the protagonist.
Shakespeare demonstrates how easily it is to be fooled by someone as Othello is the victim of this fake appearance Iago acts out, he uses the mind trick of appearance versus reality as it happens regularly in society. Other than being a theme in books and plays,
