Parent figures in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn In Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck indirectly searches for a home among the different characters, with whom he interacts. The theme of parental figures is core to this piece of work. There are different characters, which represent parental figures. These are important to Huck, as they help to shape him into a man. The characters that are a representation of parental figures include Jim, Mr. Grangerford, Miss Watson, Judge Thatcher, and Widow Douglas. Nonetheless, the lack of care from biological parents did not mean that Huck lacked a parental figure. Instead, Huck met different people, who helped to shape him into a law-abiding person, and these were the parental figures in the life of Huck. First, Widow Douglas was an important mother figure in the life of Huck. She can be argued to have taken the role of Huck’s mother. The widow lived with Huck, and struggled to civilize him. She is seen to perform different responsibilities of a mother to a son. For instance, she tried to get Huck to quit his old poor habits, such as smoking (Twain 14). Additionally, the widow attempts to instill religion into Huck using the scriptures. Although Huck did not value religion, the widow did her best to teach him religion, including the different virtues that are emphasized by religion. Miss Watson was another mother figure in the life of Huck. She, just like her sister, Widow Douglas, attempted to civilize Huck. Together with Widow Douglas, Miss Watson ensures that Huck goes to school, has nice clothes on, and does his homework, among other things. She also attempts teaching Huck religion and virtues such as benevolence (Twain 13). Overall, Miss Watson acts as a reformer and a mother figure to Huck. Therefore, Miss Watson and Widow Douglas play the role of Huck’s mother, who died when Huck was still a small boy. Jim acted as a major father figure to Huck. He puts the needs of Huck
