The Battle of Antietam took place on 17 September 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle was fought between General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and General McClellan’s Army of the Potomac. Although the battle lasted only 12 hours, it was a significant point of the American Civil War, as well as the deadliest day in history. Tactically the battle was considered a draw, but the North claimed strategic victory and President Lincoln published the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing hundreds of thousands of slaves.

The artillery batteries consisted of no more than six guns each, with two artillery batteries assigned to each of the 18 divisions. There were approximately 85,000 Soldiers serving in the Army of the Potomac at the start of the Battle. The following are the six corps and their leaders:
- The I Corps, led by MG Joseph Hooker consisting of units from the states of, Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Indiana.
- The II Corps led by MG Edwin V. Sumner consisting of units from the states of, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Connecticut, and Michigan.
- The V Corps, led by MG Fitz John Porter consisting of units from the states of, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, District of Columbia, and Ohio.
- The VI Corps led by MG William B. Franklin consisting of units from the states of, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Maryland, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
- The IX Corps led by MG Ambrose E. Burnside consisting of units from the states of, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ohio, and West Virginia.
- The XII Corps led by MG Joseph K. Mansfield consisting of units from the states of, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Massachusetts.
