Motivation

Cancer is defined as a disease caused by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells within a part of the body. It is one of the most prevalent disease, and also one of the most devastating. Within 2014 alone an estimated amount of 1,665,540 new cancer cases were diagnosed, and 588,720 cancer caused deaths occurred in the United States alone. This would be equivalent of losing the whole population of Boston, Massachusetts within solely one year. In order to reduce this death rate, cancer must be treated in a much quicker and precise way with limited damage to the individual suffering. In order to improve cancer treatments while preventing damage to other parts of an individual’s body, a non-surgical treatment should be implemented. Specifically, the use of nanotechnology should be used in cancer treatment in order to target and destroy cancer cells within a patient’s body.

Current Status Currently the most common forms of cancer treatment include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. There are many different types of surgeries used in order to treat cancer. For example, debulking surgery is a procedure done in order to remove all tumors which are causing damage to nearby tissues and organs. There are also procedures performed called diagnostic surgeries and staging surgeries in order either diagnose cancer or understand where the cancer is located and how far that it spread.
