The Future of Medicine

Stem cells are a fascinating part of organisms and not a lot of people know about them. Stem cells are unspecialized cells from which differentiated cells develop. One unique property is stem cells have the ability to develop into almost any type of cell. Stem cells can form tissue to act as a repair system (Miller, Jones, Levine 503). Given their unique abilities, stem cells offer new possibilities for treating diseases such as diabetes, and heart disease. However, much work remains to be done in the laboratory and the clinic to understand how to use these cells for cell-based therapies to treat disease, which is also referred to as regenerative or reparative medicine.A starting population of a few hundred stem cells could divide into millions over time. Unlike muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells, which do not normally replicate themselves, stem cells may replicate many times (Bethesda).

Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells are quite different, yet still have some similarities. Embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos, as the name suggests. Adult stem cells are a little different, they don 't have a place of origin. Adult stem cells are found amongst differentiated cells in a tissue or organ. There are other differences between the two types of cells. Scientists have reported that adult stem cells occur in many tissues and that they enter normal differentiation pathways to form the specialized cell types of the tissue in which they…
