My family has had their fair share of being addicted to alcohol. My grandfather had a problem with drinking, and when drinking was involved, so was gambling. He would spend his money hoping that when they left the casino, more money would be in their pockets than before. Time after time he learned that he was coming out with less then when he entered. When my grandmother first married him, she wanted nothing to do with drinking and gambling, but more that they went out together, the more tempting it was for her. Before she knew it, they both were drinking non-stop. Years passed by and they finally came to a point in their lives where they figured out that it was time for a change. They both put the alcohol away and moved forward to bigger and better things. Now 40 years later, my mother is in the same position struggling with the same problem. So, what causes alcohol addiction? Addiction is a primary, chronic disease for the brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors (Definition of Addiction par. 1). “Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows down the brain and the central nervous system 's processes” (Alcohol A Cure par.3).
