The play “Othello” by William Shakespeare focuses on the complications between the personal relationship of the main characters Desdemona and Othello. Othello is a heroic soldier who falls in love with Desdemona, and lets his “warrior” characteristic aside to be with Desdemona. In the same aspect, the film “O” is based on the relationship between Odin and Desi who struggles to let their guards down in order to have a successful relationship, which leads to both characters getting hurt physically and emotionally. In the play, Desdemona and Othello’s marriage and Othello’s hierarchy makes other characters to become resentful towards the success of the couple’s relationship and Othello’s personal achievements, which causes other characters determined to destroy their happiness. This type of situation occurs when Iago, whose motivations are to become as powerful as Othello, manipulates everyone into believing in a lie that eventually collapses the relationships between the couple. Similarly, in the film, “O”, the main character, Odin is the star player in his high school basketball team who has the girl of every guys’ dreams, which sparks jealousy in other characters, especially the team player Hugo, who is the son of the basketball team’s coach. Though it is obvious that Othello worships Desdemona and Desdemona has much respect for her husband, when they are faced with a rumor that questions their trust and loyalty towards one another, it wrecks their relationship.
