Introduction

Today about 15% of all couples in the United States have fertility problems. 40% of the problems attributed with the man and 50% with the woman and the other 10% is unexplained or due to both partners. Couples today are waiting longer to start families than their parents, this has an effect on fertility of the couple. A woman has a harder time trying to after the age of 30. So, when a couple decides that they want to start a family and can not, what options do they have? Due to the advancements in technology over the past 20 years, these couples now have options with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Sperm is mature male germ cells, which carry a male's contribution to the genes of an offspring. Infections that damage the cilia, like chlamydia, can prevent the sperm and egg from meeting. The cilia are the tiny hairs lining the fallopian tubes that help transport the egg. Damage to the cilia can cause an ectopic pregnancy in which the egg is fertilized but is unable to travel to the uterus. The egg then grows in the walls of the fallopian tube, which can cause internal bleeding or rupturing. Tubal litigation means that a woman has her tubes tied. Surgery can be done to reattach tubes after tubal litigation is done, but most women have in vitro fertilization to bypass the blockage if they decide to conceive a child later on.

Endometriosis is a progressive disease that worsens over times. It is a condition in which the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus (endometrial tissue), grows outside the uterus and attaches to other organs in the abdominal cavity such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. This causes problems because the endometrial tissue acts the same outside the uterus as it does inside. When the woman is one her menstrual cycle, the tissue swells and thickens, then sheds representing the beginning of her next cycle. The blood that is shed from the endometrial tissue in the abdominal cavity stays in that cavity causing pools of blood
