Embryonic stem cells can be defined as stem cells that are derived from the undifferentiated inner mass cells of a human embryo. In other words, the cells are derived from the inner mass of the blastocyst. Blastocyst can be referred as an early stage embryo. This means that the embryonic stem cell is grown from cells that are found in the embryo and are a few days old. Typically, the embryo that provides the embryonic stem cells is four or five days old. In addition, most of the embryonic stem cells are obtained from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized by in-vitro for infertile couples. This property has allowed them to be used as powerful tools for both research and regenerative medicine. This is because they [cells] can produce limitless number of themselves for continued research or clinic use (Sidhu 7).
Embryonic stem cell research in recent years has proved to be exciting due to the medical benefits in areas of regenerative medicine. There is no powerful tool as embryonic stem cell, as it has the potential to address every single condition that our species is heir to (Sidhu 7). This is because embryonic stem cells, which are extracted from the fifth day embryo’s blastocysts formation, have the latent to become any cell of the body. Also, many scientists and researchers hold the embryonic stem cell research with high priority due to its likeliness to cure some complex diseases. They have the ability to cure disease like diabetes, Parkinson's disease, traumatic injury, Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, heart disease, and vision and hearing loss (Steinhoff 260). It has the potential to cure spinal cord injuries, hundreds of rare immune systems and genetic disorders among others. In July of 2011, researchers at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute began a study to show that human embryonic stem cells may help in patients’ disease. They injected retinal cells derived from embryonic stem cells into patients suffering from progressive blindness. The patients who received the therapy were reported doing well and showing no signs of adverse effects from the
