What is genetic engineering? In the mid 1970s, the technology of genetic engineering had become so advanced that we could look forward to the time when we could build organisms as easily as we build computers today. Genetic engineering and biotechnology are considered to be amongst the most powerful and economically promising technological means for use in many areas. Genetic knowledge in combination with recombinant-DNA techniques have proved to be powerful technological instruments in many sectors of society. The term genetic engineering is often thought to be rather emotive or even trivial, yet it is probably the label that most people would recognize. The book An Introduction To Genetic Engineering said, “Although there are many diverse and complex techniques involved, the basic principles of genetic manipulation are reasonably simple. The premise on which the technology is based is that genetic information, encoded by DNA and arranged in the form of genes, is a resource which can be manipulated in various ways to achieve certain goals in both pure and applied science and medicine” (Nicholl, pg. 1).
