“From this moment, I, take you, as my best friend for life. I pledge to honor, encourage, and support you through our walk together. I promise to provide for your needs and always make you a priority in my life. With every beat of my heart, I will love you. This is my solemn vow” (Daversa). This vow is an example of words expressed between a man and woman on their wedding day as they face one another and declare their love in front of family and friends. This desire usually involves the pursuit of more adventure, thrill, or pleasure. To fulfill these desires, one can pursue casual sexual relations, illicit affairs, or marriage to more than one person. These alternatives to monogamy can stem from the fear or consequence of monotonous boredom. The advent of Internet and online dating tools, which makes it easier to meet and date many people, have escalated the occurrence of casual relations and polygamy. Dating websites connect individuals based on compatibility and thus, making it possible to start relations with multiple people in a short amount of time. Additionally, people who are enduring hardship in their relationships now have a platform where they can meet others in similar situations, share stories, and pursue relationships with those people to satisfy their unfulfilled fantasies. The question now arises: How many couples today, truly practice monogamy? Regardless of what the answer may be, the underlying foundation of marriage and the essence of monogamy cannot be relegated. Frequent casual relations with various partners stem from an urge to immediately satisfy one's sexual needs without the long-term commitment of a monogamous relationship. The constant change in partner maintains a sexual excitement and does not allow one's feelings to become invested in the other person. Without building an emotional connection, the person avoids feelings of disappointment and sadness when the sexual act ends
