The Problem
Genetic engineering has been around since the 1960’s although major experiments have not been really noticed until the 1990’s. The science comes in different forms the two major being cloning and genetic reconstruction. Cloning is the duplicating of one organism and making an exact copy. For example in 1996 the creation of the clone sheep named Dolly the first mammal to be cloned which was a great achievement. The other form, genetic reconstruction, is used to replace genes within humans to help or enhance the life of an unborn child for a medical reason or just for the preference of a parent.
Before being used on humans it was used on crops to enhance the livestock to increase taste size and many other desirable traits in

Diseases that this treatment has already been used against include Huntington’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and Duchene’s muscular dystrophy. Though there are diseases’s that can be helped and treated by genetic therapy. In genetic therapy even adults can have their ailments fixed by having infected or faulty cells replaced by working cells that can help repair the damaged cells. Thanks to this process many cases of life threatening diseases have been avoided.
An additional benefit of genetic engineering is the discovery of oncogenes. Oncogenes genetic cancer cells that are huge factors in causing the formation of cancer in individuals. A way to directly remove the cells has not been found but scientists hope to find ways to cut them out and save even more lives in the years to come.
Now comes the very controversial result of genetic engineering that can be seen as a benefit or a reason to be against the idea. The result is the genetic enhancement of children by giving them genes that can help develop them become more athletic give make them more apt to have a higher I.Q. or just give them a sort of advantage in any part of their life possible to enhance through genetic engineering. Parents will be able to decide the color of the skin of their children, their eye color, and many other things like maybe replacing the height gene to make them taller than average humans.
