Of the 3,181 Year Round Educational Schools, or YRE schools, the drop out rate is under two percent. The drop out rate of regular schools is about five percent. That means students at YRE schools are less likely to drop out of school than any other student in a regular school. The concept of a YRE school is for more, shorter breaks. Students attend school for about thirty to forty-five days and then receive fifteen to thirty day breaks. It is not only the students that benefit though, the teachers also benefit from the shorter breaks as well. With the students not forgetting what they learned, the teachers will not have to take as long of a time reviewing the forgotten material and can move on and teach new material to the students. An article written by Susie Valenzuela, a middle school teacher from El Paso, said, “By eliminating a long summer break, the lapse in the student academic learning during a long summer break is avoided” (1). With shorter breaks, students will not forget the material that they had learned the previous semester. The retention levels will increase in students and will be able to learn more material and be educationally ahead of their competition and regular schools. A major issue of nine-month schools is overcrowding. The amount of students is increasing. The only thing for these schools to do is to spend millions of dollars to build new schools just to allow every student the opportunity to learn. YRE schooling is the answer to overcrowding. YRE schools do not need to build more facilities to hold the growing number of students. This is because at a YRE school, there are many different groups of students. For example, one group of students would be the advanced learners. On account of the great number of groups, there will always be at least one group that is on break.
